Vidal BlancVidal Blanc is a hybrid of Trebbiano and Rayon d'Or (Seibel 4986). This midseason variety has a vigorous growth pattern and is a good producer. Vidal clusters are medium to large, moderately compact and have small golden berrys when ripe. Gold medal winning wines can be made in many styles with this versatile grape. The trellising method needs to partially shade the clusters to prevent sunburn in hotter climates. Spur pruning seems to work well with Vidal. Good harvest parameters for this variety are 19-23 brix, 3.1-3.3 PH and .8-.95 TA. At my vineyard bud break occurs around the middle of April and harvest around the 1st week of September. An advantage of this variety is that in case of a late frost, a good secondary crop will be produced. |
