It has been reported that the grapes listed below will make good wine when grown on suitable sites in zone 5 and the cooler parts of the zone 6 growing areas (Click for zone map). Most of these grapes were selected more for their disease resistence then hardiness as this is not so much a problem if your winter lows rairly get below -0F. These varieties are not very PD resistant (Click here for a PD zone map) . Many of these varieties will require a regular spray program to prevent disease due to high humidity in these growing regions. I have eliminated very early ripeners as I believe that grapes that ripen in the hottest weather will not make optimum wines. In each category I have ranked them from earliest to lastest ripeners.
